Dead Heart Bloom - “Chelsea Diaries”
At Sub Pop, I would often spend a couple hours putting together press kits from scratch, then a couple more later in the week mailing them all out with the promo to various critics around the country. All of a sudden, now that I’m the “music guy” at our school paper, all the promos now come to me. It’s been kind of a double edged sword, as I know how much work goes into putting these press kits together, but as I figured the critics I was sending promos to did, I usually ignore the press kit and go straight to the album. And lately, there’s really been nothing to write home about out of the six or so albums I’ve recieved. Slightly depressing, but finally I got a good one in Dead Heart Bloom’s Chelsea Diaries.
Dead Heart Bloom is Boris Stalsky, formally of the band Phaser, and it’s a great trip down memory lane with it’s mellow, vintage sound of harmonies and acoustic guitar. I hear the mellow sounds of The Beatles all over this album and the more I listen to it, the more I’m liking it. After a few listens, I decided I’d be writing a post about him, but little did I know what I’d find when I looked him up. All his music is available free at his site. You can buy the new album for $5, which I recommend because the album has cool design to it with a mini-album full of photos inside. But if you’re not feeling adventurous, head on over to his site and download Chelsea Diaries. The stand-outs are below, but the whole album is great in itself. Hopefully this isn’t the first and last good promo I recieve, as I’ve recieved some really strange ones, but this album’s got that relaxed, acoustic driven summer’s day feel that most of you will play in the background some day you’re just milling around the house. It’s got my recommendation, and considering it’s free, there’s no reason not to give it a listen. We all need a little relaxing music some days, and today we’ve got Dead Heart Bloom’s Chelsea Diaries for that.
