lights.on

I was going to start this post with, “I guarantee if you looked through the blogs yesterday, they most likely all talked about Dan Paul Govier’s new solo project lights.on”, but the more I searched, the less I found.  That, my friends, is a shame indeed.  Dan Paul Govier is one half of the band We Will Build, which I’ve talked about before time and time again.  They were even #31 on my top 50 of 2006 list.  So, upon receiving news from Dan that he’s gone solo as lights.on and that all his music was free to download at his site, I jumped over there as quick as I could and grabbed it all.

Govier’s one of those genuinely nice people in the music biz that is in it for the music and that attitude showed in the various email exchanges I had with We Will Build and now as lights.on.  I was a bit surprised to see my name on a mass email list that included Matt from You Ain’t No Picasso, the guys from I Guess I’m Floating, and pretty much every big blog around, but if you gave them the time of day at your blog, they were always quick to respond with a big thank you.  That’s just one of many reasons I always kept up with We Will Build’s musical progression.

As for the new albums themselves, Please is the most We Will Build feeling of the two albums and accomplishes exactly what Dan intended as he explained at his site wanting them to be “clean, short, punchy – in a word, accessible”.  Most songs barely top two minutes, but after the 40 minute album wraps up, you barely notice how short each song was because they were so catchy.  Tape on the other hand is more experimental and at times I almost prefer it over Please.  Almost, but not quite.  Tape feels more like Dan pounding away at his piano in careless joy, while Please sounds more like an album that took four months to create as he stated.

If you’re a fan of We Will Build, you’ll no doubt enjoy lights.on.  If you’re not sure who either of Govier’s bands are, then click below and start listening.  This is simple electronic pop the way it should be: simple, catchy, and danceable.  There’s not much more you could ask for and if you like Dan’s music, tell everyone you know to download his music.
