New Spoon Songs!

Damn you finals! I found out about Spoon’s first single, at least I think it might be, leaking last night at about 2am and didn’t have time to post about it. Then, I had finals all day today so I’m only now getting around to it. Between last night and now, something like six blogs posted about it so I feel a bit behind in the blog game since the majority of you who read blogs on a regular basis would have already heard it. Of course, not all of you could have heard about their new song, so this post is for you. And since I’m a bit late with the news, I compiled some of the live versions of Ga Ga tracks that are around the blogs. Here’s the first album version song to leak called “The Ghost of You Lingers” and some live songs:
Don’t Make Me a Target (live at SXSW)
Don’t You Evah
(player screws up on this one for some reason, sorry)
Black Like Me
Bonus:
Britt Daniel – Bring It On Home To Me (from Bridging the Distance, an album benefiting p:ear)
My impressions:
We’ll start with “The Ghost of You Lingers”. My first reaction was stunned silence, followed by more silence as I waited, and waited, and waited for a big Spoon-esque climax to come in with the full band but it never did. At first I was stunned, almost pissed off that nothing resulted, but then I played it on repeat as I wrote this post and it quickly grew on me. It’s definitely a headphones song and features some experimental aspects we haven’t really ever seen with Spoon before. It’s kind of a spooky song with the many Britt’s singing in and out of each speaker. Apparantly, the album title comes from the sound made from this song according to the band.
I don’t know about the album title myself. I mean, how the heck are people going to sound asking for it a the record shop. I’ll be shortening it to Ga Ga myself. As for the other live songs. “Rhythm and Soul”, “Don’t You Evah”, and “Don’t Make Me a Target” all get me really excited that this album will find Spoon finally bring back some of their old style from their Girls Can Tell days, which are some of my favorite songs. We’ll have to wait to hear the album versions of these songs, but July 10th can’t come soon enough. That’s when Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga hit stores, released on Merge. If anyone finds any other live tracks from Spoon’s new album that aren’t here, by all means let me know and I’ll throw your name in the credits.
This album cover comes from a portrait done by Ugo Mulas of Lee Bontecou in 1963.

Whoo! That ended up being a doozy of a post. Hope this got you excited for the new Spoon album. Is it weird that I’m almost more excited for this album to be released than I am about graduating college? Yeah, I thought so.

i was down on spoon after seeing one of their shows. “the ghost of you lingers” has restored my faith. thanks.
