Kosovo
Gryphon wrote me recently about his band Kosovo and he described their music as “hybrid, genre-defying downtempo with a strong pop sensibility”. I can back that description. I first put on the song “A Terraformed Existance” last week during one of my late night, after work quick computer sessions where I literally tried to check up on all my laundry list of things to do on the computer each day before falling asleep. With as much as I’ve been working lately, it’s almost become a game to see if I can pull it off.
That night I couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect that Kosovo’s songs. The ambient, electronic soundscapes they create are excellent for a near sleep state, which I was absolutely in that night. The three songs he sent me were played on repeat as I checked my email, myspace, facebook, etc. half asleep, but even barely conscious, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the music I was hearing as it slowly filled the room. “Milk of Magnesia” for some reason reminded me of “Pulk (Pull) Revolving Doors” by Radiohead had it been remixed by a happy Trent Reznor of the Nine Inch Nails. Maybe that’s just me, but regardless, Kosovo are crafting some songs that deserve to be heard. Whether you like them yourself may still be up in the air, as it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but once they finish their full-length, I’ll let you know first thing. So far, it looks like they’ve created one record that they ended up scrapping, an EP called Pascal which they’re releasing sometime soon, and are busy creating their next LP as well.
I’m not expecting to win everyone over with Kosovo, but I felt Gryphon and his band deserved a post because they’re making some really great experimental music that when in the right mood, is a truly great, relaxing listen. I don’t know about you, but I’m eagerly awaiting more music from Kosovo.
