Of God and Science

When faced with the problem this morning of forgetting to bring a cd to my car, and being too tired and mostly too lazy to get back out of my car and walk back inside my car to get one, I looked around my car to see if I had any albums at all to listen to since chances are I had a promo somewhere hidden. And what do you know, I had one under my passenger side seat. That album was Of God and Science’s self titled effort which I received a while ago when I was the music critic for Missouri State’s newspaper. I’ll admit I never gave it the listens it deserved, but a few spins today and I found myself suddenly intrigued by music I could’ve sworn didn’t interest me the first time around, but that now I was fully enjoying.
“5′7″” (that doesn’t exactly work in song title quotes), the albums first song, is easily it’s best and sounds a bit like Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky in the intro, then it turns into a very Radiohead sounding progression until the singing enters and reminds me of any of Phantom Planet’s slower songs. The rest of the album is full of hits and misses, with the best songs bearing that Radiohead music meets Phantom Planet drumming and singing sound that I’m really growing to like.
Overall this album has turned out to be a good surprise out of nowhere. It won’t make any of my lists, but the few standout tracks sound great and I imagine their live show is pretty good. It’s their next album I’m curious to hear. They’ve got plenty of potential and that potential is easy to hear, it’s just whether they can pull off an album that captures this potential that will be the real question. If they do, count me in as a new and excited fan of this Austin, TX outfit.
