KC Labor Day Weekend Road Trip + Mini Perch Mix

Oh what a crazy last four days I’ve had. I hopped in the car with Chris, Lacoma, and Jayme and we drove to Kansas City to meet up with Tyler and Kellen at Trevor’s house. As with Wisconsin, I didn’t know the person we came to stay with, but they ended up being really cool like I’d thought they would. Basically, long story short, we arrived in KC and were forced to hang out at Westport for a while hitting the bars until we could get a hold of Tyler and figure out where it was we were staying that night. After meeting up with my sister’s roommate and her boyfriend right outside of Westport and having a small dance party, we proceeded to get directions to the wrong Mission Road, since there’s also a Street, Boulevard and a few others and ended up driving around by far the most ridiculously upscale, rich neighborhood I’ve ever seen. After about seven roundabouts and a lot of screaming “what the F! We were just here!”, we finally made our way to a completely different part of town than we were previously lost in and met up with Trevor. Two more days and crazy nights full of all kinds of bad decisions and I met up with my mom and sister and hung out in Liberty for another day until my great Aunt’s funeral, which was the main reason I’d come to KC.

I’m never good at funerals, but who is really? My great Aunt Dorothy, or my Grandma’s sister, I was unusually close with considering that side of the family wasn’t immediate family. But I’m probably closer to my second cousins than most people will ever get, so seeing them all again really got to me. She was a wonderful lady and everyone on that side of the family are great people as well. Seeing my Great Uncle sit there quietly as stories were being told of all the wonderful things Dorothy did and how much she meant to everyone, it really struck me that this was what life is all about. The joy I’ve gotten from helping out our bands and exposing people to great music is just the tip of the iceberg of what she accomplished in her lifetime. I sat for nearly the entire story telling portion of the service just staring at my great Uncle Johnny thinking if I found someone I could get that close to and be able to live my life with, being that happy watching my kids and grandkids grow up, then I will die a happy man. I’m only on the very beginning of my lifelong journey and I think I’ve got the building lifelong friendships and helping everyone I can part off to a great start. Hopefully someday soon I’ll find that special someone for myself as well. I know she’s out there, I mean, I didn’t write “Worth the Wait” for nothing. For now, I’m perfectly content helping bands out through LemonDrop, going on road trips with my amazing friends, and simply getting to live my musical life that I imagine many would love to have. I’ve learned to take nothing for granted, and so far fate’s been kind to me because of this fact.

Here’s a mini-Perch Mix from the road trip. There’s plenty more I wish I could remember the song titles to, but this will do for now. And like usual, if you’re in a band or just want to chat, I’m always game to talk music or help bands out. Just email me!

Mini KC Road Trip Perch Mix.

  1. The Dears – 22: The Death of All the Romance (my favorite song of the trip, made all the better by Jayme and Lacoma’s beautiful harmonizing over it)
  2. Pete Yorn – Sleep Better (my favorite song off the Break-ups and Heartaches compilation Jayme had put together)
  3. Sigur Ros – Dauưalagiư (aka Untitled 7 off of ( ) album…voted #1 song we’d like to have sex to by the four of us while driving up to KC)
  4. The Album Leaf – Over the Pond (ft. Jonsi of Sigur Ros)
  5. Coldplay – Everything’s Not Lost (four part harmony during the chorus with four singers in the car at the same time. One of my favorite random moments of the trip)
  6. Faultline ft. Chris Martin – Your Love Means Everything Pt. 2 (played on repeat as we got more and more lost in the rich part of KC)
  7. Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer (caused my uncle and I to spontaneously break out into serious rock head bobbing on the way home and yell out “Sledgehammer!”)

Holy cow, what a nice mix. I found you on Hype Machine. Incidentally, I have a soft and dear spot for The Album Leaf. This song was the last song I listened to before I asked my wife to marry me. It was a cold, snowy day in March of 2005 and I was on my way to her house. Driving through winding roads with lots of snow and trees is all I can associate with the song now. The most serene moment of my life. Awesome post!

New song Foxie Boxer is really good. They’re good for umm, those times when you just want to scream at the top of your lungs, in a good way.

not only is the music in this post good, but really, just a great post and sentiments.
