My Top 10 Albums of the Moment: Part 1
Alright! Everyone love lists, so I decided to stretch one throughout the week. I basically came up as an idea for the list after I lost count of how many times I was asked exactly what I was listening at the moment. So, I said screw it, this top 10 list was asking to be made. September is turning out to be one heck of a month for good releases, so next week I’ll focus on all those, but for now, chickity check out our latest LemonDrop poster made by the one and only Dan Mahaney, and enjoy the list. I’m sure you can guess which bands I’ll be featuring, but who knows, you may end up surprised by some.

Hot Hot Heat - Happiness Ltd.

Having been a huge fan of their album Make Up the Breakdown, the constant change and maturation of the band over their career was never something I was too fond of. But, regardless of that, I still enjoyed everything they released and Happiness Ltd. continues this trend. If you’re looking for the dance-rock of Make Up the Breakdown, well, there’s a hint of it here, with the cowbell/wood block heavy “Give Up?” and the piano-driven “My Best Friend”. They even remake “5 times out of 100″, which was a strange move to me since I’m so used to the original, but it adds a lot to the album. In the end, it’s more melodic wailing over bouncy lyrics, but it’s still vintage Hot Hot Heat, and that’s all that really matters.

Pinback - Autumn of the Seraphs

Most of you know simply from reading the Perch a lot that I’m a pretty huge fan of Pinback. Their last album was one of my favorites released that year and it has always baffled me how I could love such simple rock, but I do. This new effort doesn’t quite top Summer in Abaddon, but I also thought that album was a classic, so obviously this one didn’t beat that. But hidden gems like “Good to Sea” and “Devil You Know” help this album stand out among a lot of great September releases. Heck, “Good to Sea” is easily one of the top 10 songs of the year for me, but that’s for another list. Long time fans of Pinback won’t be disappointed. If you’re new to Pinback, start with Summer in Abaddon and eventually make your way to this one from their older releases.
I’d post “Good to Sea” in a second, but I’ve already been in trouble from their label for even putting it as my myspace profile song when I randomly found it on myspace, so I’m not even going to mess with it. Don’t want the “web sheriff” to yell at me again….but this blog wasn’t worried about it. Now go listen to it!
EDIT: It’s on youtube…so I’m posting it. Love this song.
