Manchester Orchestra – I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child

Let’s stay on the Canvasback Music fix shall we? I tried to think why in the world I hadn’t talked about Manchester Orchestra, who are touring with Annuals, up until now and I couldn’t think of a good reason. I’ve been listening to this album for a while now and love it. The lead singer, Andy Hull, has a voice that is very reminiscent of Cloud Cult’s lead singer mixed with the Format’s lead singer, and the music is a strange mix between the Format and Deathcab. That’s just for those of you needing comparisons, because when all is said and done, Manchester Orchestra sound pretty unique and that has kept me coming back to this stellar release time and time again.
Stand-outs include the opener “Wolves at Night”, Format’s long lost brother of a song in “The Neighborhood is Bleeding”, the epic Brand New sounding “Where Have You Been?”, which Jesse Lacey of Brand New actually came out and helped sing during some of their shows, and finally the most Deathcab sounding of the bunch in “Golden Ticket”. Overall, I Feel Like a Virgin Losing a Child is an excellent album and will find itself easily among the top of my top 50 list at the end of this month for sure.
Bonus:
Annuals and Manchester Orchestra, since they’re touring together, were selling very limited edition 7 inches with each band covering the other band’s songs on tour and thanks to the internet, I happened to find a couple of those covers. Excellent stuff indeed, especially Annuals’ take on “Where Have You Been?”
