Michael Showalter – Sandwiches and Cats

First off, I drove to Branson and back today for work to install one of our more lavish fireplaces we’ve done in a while.  We used a red-orange coloring in the mix so that made a cool color for a fireplace mantle.  The point here though is that the house was being built by some guy that is head of Anheiser-Busch distributing here in town, or somewhere in the region.  Let’s just say this house was worthy of being on Cribs.  Absolutely insane.  20 foot high vaulted ceilings, an Anheiser-Busch stone thing prominently in the main room that is 120 years old that they bought from Busch headquarters, two basements, more rooms than I could count, one of those pools that looks like it has no edge and blends into the lake skyline, an insane hilltop view of the Lake of the Ozarks, and so much more I can’t even fathom with this house.  If I had that kind of money, I might build something of that size, but it’d be a music complex with my living quarters, a nice studio, a small venue, and LemonDrop offices in it.  No way I’d need all that space to live in.  These people with tons of money are ridiculous, and it’s even more ironic to see the house full of us little professional grunts doing our trade masterfully, some of the best in the biz, and most just make enough each year to survive on.  Rich people…sheesh.

Anyway, I brought Michael Showalter’s new album along with us since it was a 40 minute drive and what a welcome relief that turned out to be on the way home.  If you haven’t heard of Michael Showalter, he was in Wet Hot American Summer, he was in the comedy troop Stella, and most recently he’s had his own short on College Humor called the Michael Showalter Showalter.  His new cd, Sandwiches and Cats, is much like Patton Oswalt’s album with a lot of reflections on their super nerdy pasts and discussions about pop culture.  Where Showalter differs though is his album isn’t just a live show, but there’s songs and skits thrown in the mix that are pretty funny.  I can only share one mp3, but I love the song “The Mountain” so I’ll stream it and see if the hounds come for me.  This version of “Erotica” I’m allowed to share is safe for work, but if you’ve heard the original it’s even funnier because he replaces all the vulgar words with food.  “The Mountain” has KG from Tenacious D playing guitar and chiming in every now and then.
