Apollo Sunshine Revisited
Listening to Apollo Sunshine today at work on full blast while alone cleaning up the shop I came to the realization that Apollo Sunshine, one of my favorite pop bands ever, are criminally underrated. If you’ve seen them live, then you’re already a fan, because I’ve yet to meet anyone who has seen them live and left thinking anything besides, damn that guitar player was crazy/amazing, the other two members were also great musicians and that was one of the most intense, crazy fun show I’ve seen in a while. If you didn’t say that, then you were at that Decemberists show I went to a few years ago, where Apollo Sunshine opened, I pogo jumped around the crowd of literary indielectuals, singing “This is finally HAPPENING!!” to the song while all the horn-rimmed glasses wearing kids sighed in boredom at this band that was “way too energetic for their own good” and wanted their boring Decemberists to take the stage already.
I like the Decemberists, so I’m not knocking them, but I’m just saying, that show was ridiculous for the simple fact that I felt like an outcast for dancing to Apollo Sunshine. So, the moral of this story is if you walked out of an Apollo Sunshine unhappy, well, then maybe you’re too sophisticated for me. But yeah, enough long-winded stream of consciousness stories aside, I…love…Apollo Sunshine. Plain and simple, and if you somehow haven’t heard of their experimental pop greatness until now, well, then this post is for you. For the rest of you, this post is here to spark that Apollo Sunshine bug you know you have inside you and get you digging out those two albums for some perfect pop tunes now that Spring is nearly here.
