Georgie James – Places

Do you like The New Pornographers? How about Mates of State? Yes you say. Well, Georgie James is for you then. Georgie James is the band former Q and Not U drummer John Davis started after working out a few songs with singer/songwriter friend Laura Burhenn after they realized their common taste for pop music from the 50’s and 70’s (or so Wikipedia so confidently claims).
Whether or not that last fact is true is up in the air, but it’s not hard to believe after hearing their music. I forget how I initially came across their album Places, which was released last September on Saddle Creek, but all it took was one listen to the song “Need Your Needs” and I was hooked. It’s the kind of poppy guy/girl sung upbeat songs that are perfect now that it’s starting to warm up. I’m almost glad I didn’t catch it until now. It probably wouldn’t have resonated as much for me back in September. But be it as it may, me being late to the game ended working out rather nicely, and so here I am letting all you late bloomers to this album know it exists. It exists indeed, and it’s great. Now if these rain clouds could just go away, I’d take a drive with the windows down blasting “Need Your Needs” or “More Lights”.

I’ve been a Georgie James fan for awhile. I was listening to ‘Places’ as I perused the web and made a visit to the Pelican’s Perch. And here it was, a post on the band.
A wonderful album. Good stuff from D.C.
