Langhorne Slim & the War Eagles
Alright, this weekend, and the beginning of this week so far, has found me digging up all sorts of great music because of a little thing called Finals week. Not for me, since I graduated last year, but everyone and anyone I hang out with are buried in the books. So, I’ve been holed up in my room these last few nights going through my monthly goldrush of new music after quite a while without anything too new or interesting. Happens every month, but this time around there’s been about twice as much new music. Can’t complain about that. So, all this week I’m going to write up a bunch of small posts trying to cover all the new music. You with me? Good.

Langhorne Slim’s new album came in the mail a few weeks ago and it just sat there looking all lonely at the corner of my desk begging to be listened to. So I gave in and gave it a spin. The first few listens peaked my curiosity, and after five or so listens through after it was in my car for a week straight, I just gave in and had to confess, this album is great. I’ve heard him described as restless folk. I’d agree with that description with Langhorne strumming energetically during most songs, singing in his happy, wailing vocals that really grow on you.
Stand-outs are all over this album, but “Hello Sunshine” was my immediate favorite. It comes in at barely under 2 1/2 minutes, but has a very Arcade Fire pounding piano and percussion feel that I just love. As soon as the “ooh’s” come in with the melody, I just threw my hands up and said what a great song. I just wish it was longer. I could talk all about the other great songs on this self-titled album, but I’ll just leave it with the songs below and see if you enjoy the restless/frantic folk of Langhorne Slim like I do. Definitely a hidden gem amongst the bigger indie releases that’s not to be missed.
Colette (be sure to listen past the 2:34 mark for the little instrumental part)
