Owl City - Maybe I’m Dreaming

I’ll admit right off the bat that if I found Owl City a few years ago, I’d be proclaiming it the best music I’d heard in a long time. Of course, I’ve been past my Postal Service phase for a while now, and while Mae are still a guilty pleasure of mine, they’re not nearly as much after their latest album, which was somewhat of a disappointment for me. But, let’s pretend it’s 2004 again and both Mae and the Postal Service cut an album together. Sounds like an interesting, but great combo right?
Well, thanks to Adam Young and his one man band Owl City, that unlikely Mae meets Postal Service sound is now a reality. His newest album, Maybe I’m Dreaming, was the result of many sleepless nights he spent battling insomnia and I can’t get enough of it. It’s 12 songs of sleepy electro pop that are impossible to ignore, but in a strange way that finds them just floating along while you bob your head and do whatever it is you’re doing. Music like this, the kind you can put on at any time of the day on repeat without ever noticing you’re already listening to it for the second time through, is some of my favorite stuff to listen to.
It’s hard to pick a clear stand-out track, as they’re all good, but I’d start with the opener, “On the Wing”, and the downtempo “Saltwater Room”, which has a girl singing along with him. I checked out his previous EP and enjoyed that one just as much as this new one. If you can’t wait to hear the new Postal Service album, which I think comes out near the end of this year or early next year, then Owl City is more than enough to satisfy even the most hardcore Postal Service fan. And that goes for you Mae fans out there as well. I’d never have compared Mae with Postal Service before now, but Owl City proves that the combo of melodic emo rock and electro indie pop works perfectly.
