Why? – “The Blackest Purse”

Quick update for you Why? fans out there.  Their new song “The Blackest Purse” from their upcoming album Eskimo Snow premiered over at Pitchfork on Tuesday and a friend tipped me off and sent me the link.  “[The songs] feel like song-songs with– I don’t want to say a typical verse-chorus structure, but they’re song-songs,” said Yoni Wolf of the new album.  I loved the unique hip hop take on indie rock from their previous albums, but I don’t think the fact that this new one seems to have gone in a completely different direction is a bad thing at all.  I love Why?, and if anything, this may just make me love them even more.  We’ll have to wait until September 22nd to find out just how different this new album sounds.  But judging from the first single, I think it’s a safe bet we can take Yoni’s word for it that Eskimo Snow is full of “song-songs” instead of their usual hip hop experiments.  Here’s hoping their fanbase only gets stronger because of it.
